Certified welding inspectors play a vital
role in the fabrication industry. Their responsibilities have a direct
bearing on final product quality and thus public safety. By adhering to
specifications and following an inspection plan they help industry avoid
repairs and costly project delays.
Eligibility requirements are a minimum of one year’s welding fabrication
or inspection experience or completion of a recognized course in the
fundamental principles and practices of welding and quality control and
inspection of welding.
While educational courses are not mandatory for certification,
candidates who want to undertake preparatory study for the certification
examinations have an excellent resource through the various modular
learning programs offered by the CWB. Candidates who successfully
complete the CWB study courses receive credits for the welding inspector
examinations.
The Canadian Welding Bureau and American Welding Society recognize the
qualifications each organization gives to welding inspectors under their
respective qualification scheme.
The Canadian Welding Bureau also recognizes welding inspector
certifications granted by The Welding Institute (TWI), Cambridge, UK to
CSWIP-WI-6-92 and the American Petroleum Institute (API) to API 510
Pressure Vessel Inspector and API 570 Piping Inspector Certification
Programs. Certain conditions apply to each of these programs. Refer to
